Recently a close friend recommended the book Letters by a Modern Mystic by Frank C. Laubach. The book is a series of letters that Laubach wrote back to his family about his “experiment”.

Laubach was a missionary to the Philippines in the 1930s. He had been in the country for 15 years when he decided to start “experimenting in a more complete surrender then ever before “ He writes:

But this year I have started out trying to live all my waking moments in conscious listening to the inner voice, asking without ceasing, “What, Father, do you desire said? What, Father, do you desire done this minute?”

It is clear that this is exactly what Jesus was doing all day every day. But it is not what His followers have been doing in very large numbers.

Letters by a Modern Mystic – Laubach

This morning I felt like the Lord was inviting me into a similar experiment. I have tried to keep the Lord at the front of my mind for weeks now, but like Laubach, there has been more failure than success. I will go hours without refocusing on God, but that is why this is an experiment.

Specifically, I felt like invitation was to document my “experiment” in public way. The invitation was to also document what I’m learning simply and quickly. Often, I find myself spending more time on creating the structure than actually adding value to the things I pursue.

This will be different. The posts will be short, just like Laubach’s letters. They will show the ups and downs as I experiment with keeping God at the forefront of my mind as I go through my day. I will be listening for His voice, and I will be looking for ways to See, Speak, and Serve!

Be blessed, Noah.
